Inspiration

Practice with Morning Star today was sweet! Due to VERY irregular, almost nonexistent, practice for more then two weeks I only focused on breath and bandha and tried not to pressure myself at all. Stayed for extra breaths in most asanas and only did up to janu sirsasana A. Got some really nice adjustments from Morning Star and she helped me find new ways to work with my bad left arm and shoulder. We did John Scotts preps for backbends that I did with Mercury a few weeks ago which was awesome! Who knows, even I might be able to do back-drops one day ;-) After practice we took a nice stroll and then caught a bus back to town. Oh, I just love spending time with her! She is such an inspiring and encouraging person.

I am laughing because Cranky is here too and obviously great minds think alike. : )

hi Annabella, welcome! yes, as you see i started a blog too, though not a very frequent writer - i'm trying! hope you enjoy it :)

Cranky, my Morning Star IS a blessing! i'm so lucky to have her. do you have people like that in your lives too?

Chitta, i live far far away from any ashtangis, so in terms of practice, any time i practice with another human, it is a blessing! but, the online community has been a huge blessing because i think without it, my practice would have whithered!

i DO realize how blessed i am to have good teachers and sources of inspiration like that so close to me! it's easy to become comfy and accustomed to the closeness of things when you live in a big city, so yes i guess i'm a bit spoiled ;-) (will you still adopt me?) i tend to be a bit whiny about not being able to practice with Morning Star as regularly as i used to since she opened her own shala so far away from were i live and work. you help me put that in perspective, for sure :) and i am amazed about this blog community because do feel how important it is to you and others in you're situation! and cranky, i'm so impressed by your practice, it's gorgeous and you are a true inspiration too to me!

i'm just a little curious, how long have you and your family lived in the sticks? and when are you moving to DC? (you probably said somewhere on your blog but i haven't found it yet...) i hope you have (or find) good and inspirational teachers when you get there!

i don't think you are spoiled at all. and of course i will still adopt you! the more 'children' who can pull their weight in the house, the better! especially if they are ashtangis!
i have been practicing for five years, and i learned from casey palmer in Portland oregon. we have lived in the sticks for three years now, so i have been practicing by myself for longer than i practiced with a teacher! we will move to DC this summer and i have already found some teachers that i love and some really great people at the shala. so i am excited. but i need to remember that i am able to gain a great deal with self practice and not be too dependant!
how long have you been practicing?

oh, i should probably write a post about my yoga story!

so just in short, i took my first ashtanga yoga course (1 day/week for two semesters) in 2001. after that i had a mayor break for several years, only attending a workshop or intense course a year, still deeply convinced i would return to a more regular practice when the time was right! which it was about 2,5 years ago. i started to take a 1 day/week course again for about a year (that's when i met Morning Star :). since 1,5 year i have a fairly regular practice meaning 3-5 days weeks (a little less in the winter time).

i believe i would benefit a lot from developing a self practice like you say, to be more independent and in my case be more disciplined.

meant 'major', of course...

I've said before that I deeply admire those who have very consistent self practices. I can do it sometimes and really enjoy it, and lately have been questioning the discipline it would take to do it ALL the time - I'm not sure I have it!

It's wonderful for those days where you don't want to or can't go to the shala, and some of the deepest, most rewarding practices I've had on my own.

I love that you call your teacher Morning Star!

Wait... you have a blog? Can I visit?

Cranks and Anna can tell you I'm a pretty ok person if that is ok with you?

I just read it and it's as you say--triksy, spirited... and light. I like it. :)

Can I link to you? I don't like doing this without asking people.

Your teacher sounds delightful. Are there a lot of ashtanga options in Sweden? I am thinking probably not.

Anna, of course you can link to me, how nice of you to ask! I'm just embarrassed that I haven't had the time to keep up to date here :-/ As from this week things are looking up so I'm determined to be a better blogger soon (not just a 'commenter' :)

If/when I decide to include a blog roll here, can I link to you then?

Actually there are quite a lot ashtanga options i Stockholm at this point! I'm not sure about the rest of Sweden, though, I guess in the bigger cities you could find at least some (led) classes.

When I started in 2001 I had a hard time finding a studio or shala that was specifically ashtanga. Now there are at least six or seven shalas in the centre of the city, and further more in the suburbs! I'm very happy that my shala is just a few blocks from where I live :) It's quite a funny story how I found it, but I think I'll include that in my 'yoga story' that I'm working on for a post!
